The Epidural Steroid Injection is an outpatient procedure done in the Operating Room or a Special Procedure Room. For your safety and comfort, Dr. Becker will connect you to monitoring equipment (EKG monitor, blood pressure cuff, and a blood-oxygen monitoring device). In addition, Dr. Becker may start an intravenous line and give you some medication to help you relax. You will be positioned with soft padding on the procedure table. After your skin is cleansed with an antiseptic solution, Dr. Becker will inject some numbing medicine that will produce a warm sensation for a few seconds.
After the numbing medicine takes effect, Dr. Becker will insert another needle and with the assistance of a special X-ray machine called a Fluoroscope, inject a radiopaque dye to confirm that your injection will be in the correct location. At this point, Dr. Becker will inject an anti-inflammatory medication (depomedrol or celestone). It is possible that you will feel discomfort similar to your normal pain as the medicine is injected. This is normal, and the discomfort usually disappears quickly.
